about

J.S. Bach's Prelude No 1 in C Major is, to my ears, one of the most beautiful pieces of classical piano music. It's also one of the few pieces by Bach that I can actually play.

During the Covid 19 lockdown, I took it on myself to see if I could make arrangements of the prelude as ambient pieces. I was keen to avoid things sounding too cheesey, as I find often happens when classical pieces are given a "modern" makeover. As I experimented with the arrangements, I found myself going off on tangents and creating new pieces, inspired by the arrangement of the prelude that I was working on.

At the same time, my friend and artist Jane Beinart (www.janebeinart.co.uk) was producing some artwork exploring decay and she kindly allowed me to use these as artwork for the album. I felt that my spinoff pieces represented a degradation and decay of the prelude that had inspired them.

Hence, I settled on Preludes and Decay as the title of the project.
